What an unbelievable film. Director Jonathan Levine’s attention to detail in making positive that every aspect of the film looks and feels like the 90’s really adds to the feel of the film. All of the actors work really well especially Sir Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck, who has a breakout performance in this film, showing that he’s got a future in this business. With droll dialogue, nicely shot cinematography, and backed by an unbelievable soundtrack, The Wackness is definitely a film to gaze this summer if you loved the 90’s.

The year is 1994, A high school teenager in Modern York who doesn’t have any friends but spends his time selling marijuana using his disguise as a person who sells ice in the park, while saving up all his money.

But all is not cold in the life of Luke, his parents are having some financial problems and in exertion of being evicted, his mind is on getting laid and losing his virginity and the only person he can communicate his emotions to is one of his clients, Dr. Jeffrey Squires (Ben Kingsley) . He wants some anti-depressants but Squires tells him to embrace his distress and more or less, he needs to derive a girlfriend and win laid.

Dr. Squires is not exactly a role model for Josh. He’s a product of the 60’s, loves doing cocaine and marijuana and somehow, is able to connect with Luke and provides him professional advice for drugs. But like Luke, his life is not at all going that large. His relationship with his wife Kristin is not at all going so large and all they have is their memories of sex and doing drugs. Meanwhile, he notices that his step-daughter Stephanie (Olivia Thirlby, “Juno”) is getting closer to Luke. But realizes that it’s not treasure that she has for Luke, it’s unbiased a sexual plug.

Luke doesn’t have mighty experience with people, savor and thus he discovers himself while hanging out with Stephanie. Dr. Squires as a father doesn’t want his stepdaughter to be around a drug dealer but at the same time, as his psychiatrist, he doesn’t feel that Stephanie is pleasant for Luke. But after their passionate time together, he develops feelings for Stephanie so strong that when he says the words of “I Appreciate You” to her, Stephanie realizes that this poke has gone so far and ends their romantic slide and all communication with Luke. Around that same time, Dr. Squires wife Kristin decides to leave her husband.

Both men are obviously heartbroken but somehow, they accumulate comfort in talking with each other and thus Luke and Dr. Squires compose a friendship that would interestingly introduce Dr. Squires to Luke’s world and for Luke, getting the needed therapy from his shrink. So, the account handsome considerable focuses on a young man (Luke) who is guided by an older man (Dr. Squires) but then the myth starts to shift of the younger guy guiding an older man.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

The film is featured in anamorphic widescreen ala 2:35:1 ratio. The film is shot in different parts of Tokyo but oviously scenes such as the Twin Towers had to be establish into the film. When you do a period section, especially if it’s 1994, with a busy city like Fresh York, unless you have a spacious budget, you got earn do what with what you have. And thus a lot of the scenes are shot indoors but you do have some outdoor scenes with Luke and Stephanie at the beach or areas where Luke is dealing drugs.

As for audio, you collect a English and French 5.1 Dolby Digital track and the film is primarily a dialogue driven film. But audio-wise, what makes this film shine is the fact that it’s 1994 and the mature school songs, especially the hip-hop songs of that time are what comes blaring out your speakers. Bass and all courtesy of artists such as Noted B.I.G., a Tribe Called Quest, KRS-One, Nas, Biz Markie, etc.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

The DVD shines in its amount of special features offered. Included are:

* Commentary with Director Jonathan Levine and Actor Josh Peck - A very casual and frosty commentary and you learn valuable tidbits about the film. From Ben Kingsley giving advice to Josh, having to work with Mary-Kate in the amount of hours they had to work with her and how hard it was for Josh Peck to do his lovemaking scene with Olivia Thirlby. Levine and Peck have frigid and fun commentary talking about blunts, the music, it’s typically a commentary that is like hanging out with friends. Especially at the slay when they talk about hanging out after the commentary and playing XBOX 360, you don’t hear that on director’s commentary, so it’s all friendly.

* Keeping it Real: A Day in the Life of Writer/Director Jonathan Levine - For this eight little feature, Jonathan Levine is traveling around the country and London to promote “The Wackness” at film festivals and interviews at radio stations. Jonathan is joined by the cast and his girlfriend, production designer Annie Spitz and his brother and his girlfriend.

* Time in a Bottle: Late the Scenes of The Wackness - An 18-minute featurette featuring behind-the-scenes on the making of the film. Levine explains that the film is not 100% autobiographical and a screenplay that was based on an understanding he had during filmschool. Also, featuring Levine’s staff and how they were able to secure that 1994 setting.

* The Luke Shapiro Present Episode 1 & 2 - These are five exiguous short episodes that were created for cable access featuring Luke Shapiro and his doorman Miguel. The first featuring Luke, Miguel (on keyboards) and his dapper Tony. The second featuring Luke, Miguel (on keyboards) and a dancer.

* Deleted Scenes - This scene features four deleted/extended scenes from the film. The total amount of deleted scenes is about five minutes long featuring “Luke Works in Cap and Gown”, “Extended Squires Vacation”, “Squires in Stephanie’s Room” and “Dad’s Walkman Draw”.

* The Wackness Trailers - Featuring all five theatrical and teaser trailers

I have to say that “The Wackness” is a fine frigid coming-of-age film and yes, there have been many of these type of movies but a definitely, modern film. Having the film place in 1994, having the main character as a drug dealer, having his psychiatrist as one of his clients and also a hardcore drug user and fair how everything impartial comes together is quite luscious.

But the performances by Ben Kingsley and Josh Peck was well done. Two roles by talents that I would never observe coming. Ben Kingsley in so many serious roles in “Ghandi”, “Schindler’s List”, “Rules of Engagement” to name a few and then Josh Peck who stars in the Nickelodeon teen point to “Drake & Josh”, these two taking on roles so different and to witness them drinking alcohol and doing/dealing drugs, definitely it’s quite a bit of a surprise. But the original thing is that these two talents had mammoth chemistry and everything worked out quite well.

And there are also a expedient number of talent in this film. Olivia Thirlby did a gigantic job as Squire’s daughter Stephanie and Luke’s admire interest. Did a mammoth job playing a sexual teen and then you have Mary-Kate Olsen as a pothead who unprejudiced makes out with Ben Kingsley. Famke Janssen as Dr. Squires sexy wife, Blueprint Man playing the character “Percy” as Luke’s supplier and powerful more.

There are honest these exiguous moments in the film, from mannerisms to the slight things that a character does, it really makes this film seem quite realistic and earn it all work. Of course, the early 90’s nostalgia and the music plays a great fraction in the film. When Luke and Olivia are making adore, R. Kelly playing on the suppose box to Luke playing Zelda on his NES, these cramped things are what many people who grew up at the time and listened to the music can related to. So, definitely a nice touch!

And the DVD, impartial makes you savor the film even more with wintry commentary, the featurettes and more. It’s not all business-like and professional. You have Levine and Peck quite casual and as I mentioned in the commentary part, it’s like hanging out with a few friends and unbiased everyone having a agreeable time.

Now granted, perhaps I may be a bit biased having grown up with the pop culture of the 90’s and hearing the songs and the style from those years boosting my appreciation for the film but for an indie film, I have to admit that the overall presentation was quite non-traditional. Again, there are a bunch of “coming-of-age” films out there but this one was really thinking outside of the box and instead of getting a “revenge of the nerd” happy-feel safe storyline, each of these characters have flaws but it’s all about discovering one’s self.

All in all, a solid DVD with a lot of humor, a lot of soul and all out fun!

I can’t beget this movie is a decade and a half veteran! Neither will you when you belief it again (or for the first time) . The cinematography is unique and the comedy is timeless.

The account revolves around a simple American con-man (brilliantly played by Steve Martin) who specializes in charming wealthy women out of whatever charity he can manage to swindel. That is, until he stumbles on to the master (Michael Caine), a suave ultra-swank European who doesn’t go for the snappily buck, but rather for the lifeless millions.

The dissimilarity in their styles, as Martin invades Caine’s comfortable European playground (and then ultimately resolve to work together) fabricate for crude comedy. However, not the Jim Carrey slapstick that’s been so celebrated lately, rather, this is infinitely more subtle in it’s buildup, but “accept accumulate” as comic as most of the best contemporary comedy out there.

If you have yet to explore this film, count yourself lucky. Occupy this DVD and give yourself 15 minutes to obtain into it. You won’t be disappointed. For those of you who have seen it and are thinking about buying. Do it. It’s one of the few DVD’s in my collection I frequently sight and relish.

Of all the versions of les Miserables that I’ve seen (and I’ve seen a few of them), this is by far and away the best and also closest to the spirit of the book. The whole film is imbued with an atmosphere which transports you to a different time and place. The story absorbs you, the characters come alive. The composition of the images often gives the impression that they have been carefully sketched out, in the manner of Eisenstein or Bergman - only they have a simplicity that does not intimidate. The telling of the story, the acting, the scenery makes it an immortal film - it still makes you weep and it does not resort to Holywood’s tricks to do so. For me it is amongst the top ten films ever made.

As of this writing I have seen six different film versions of Victor Hugo’s classic novel. Not until viewing Raymond Bernard’s version had I felt like I had seen the definitive filming of LES MISERABLES.

Don’t let the year it was made (1934) scare you away. Yes - filmmaking had only been around for a few years and you may think that the later versions would be more technically advanced and capable of re-creating the novel in a more fully realized fashion. Nothing could be further from the truth. After viewing the 1934 version, I question why anyone chose to remake the film to begin with?

From the opening shot of the contorted, gnarled, grimacing figure carved into stone being held up by a similar human figure literally carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders to the final shot of the two candlesticks slowly extinguishing simultaneously with Jean Valjean’s last breath. The candlesticks representing so many aspects of Jean Valjean’s life - oppression, thievery, poverty, wealth, light and finally death. Jules Kruger’s brilliant cinematography utilizes not only the German expressionistic style that was popular then (shadows, light, angles, etc…), but the occasional handheld camera work was years ahead of it’s time.

What I was most impressed with, along with the cinematography, was the caliber of acting from the lead players. When viewing films of that era it seems that much melodrama goes into the performances. But from the first moment you witness the subtlety, sincerity and honesty of Harry Baur’s performance as Jean Valjean, you are mesmerized. He encompassed all that made Jean Valjean such a noble, dignified, compassionate and tragic figure in the novel. I will always picture Jean Valjean as portrayed by the brilliant Harry Baur. All the other performers totally give of themselves to make the characters come to life. They bring you along with them on their journey. You truly experience their pains and joys and at each tragic turn you feel like you have lost a true friend.

I was entertained and transported for nearly 5 hours. The quality of the film, the storytelling, the acting and the care that went into this production stayed with me long after the candles burned out. I hope you too, will discover this long, lost treasure of foreign cinema.

Buzby is very funny! I highly recommend this series to anyone with children. My kids LOVE Hermie & Friends, and I really like the content. You should definitely give this series a try- we like it even better than Veggie Tales.

This is a great DVD. Very interesting for my 4yr old grandson. Also teaches great life-lessons.

Not as fine as Kasumi number one or Kasum number three. Serene the whole series 1-3 is lively and enjoyable

Lady Ninja Kasumi Vol. 2 picks up where Vol. 1 left off, as Kasumi face off against Hattori Hanzo and his legions of assassins. The sex scenes were always a treat and the action was okay. This is a superior DVD to win.

I have this movie on VHS, in Japanese. and I thought it was good, so it on DVD will probably be very good too. This takes place after Gokou had returned on Earth after the Freezer encounter on Namek. It deals with an evil Namek-jin who comes to earth, Planning to use earth as his new Planet Cruiser. Yes, a planet cruiser, they had figured out how to make the planets cruise around space. He was born on Namek, but sent away around the same time Piccolo did, except he landed on the Planet Slug. Thanks to being raised on that planet, he and the rest of his teams couldnt take the sunlight, because Slug was a dark planet. So they first had a machine that took away the sunlight, which would end up killing most all life on Earth and also used the Dragonballs to make him young again. But it also turns out that he’s a Super Namek-jin, like Piccolo, a mutated one because he can grow taller than the buildings on earth. But Piccolo is able to find his weakness, because Piccolo has the same weakness….. but dont worry, I’m not going to spoil the ending for you all.

The fourth DBZ movie, Lord Slug was originally released in Japan under the title “Super Saiya-Jin Gokuu” but was changed into Lord Slug after being dubbed into English and released in the U.S.A. This movie is a bit shorter than the others, but it is still good. I love the first song, besides the theme, played on this movie, I was “playing the music” in my head ’cause it was so cool. It wasn’t all that funny when Gohan and Higher Dragon annoyed Piccolo in the beginning, but it was a little. This movie practically gets right to the point, basically right after that scene the movie gets down to business. First we see a so-called “computer simulation” of a giant meteor destroying the planet, then some more kick … music starts to play and it shows Goku and Krillin trying to deflect the asteroud with their Kamehameha beams fused together (I’m not telling what happens to the asteroid). Let’s jump forward to after Goku starts fighting Lord Slug, now, Slug gets him enraged and Goku gets really strong, people say that he went Super Saiyan but actually Goku never goes Super Saiyan until DBZ movie 5 (which is Cooler’s Revenge). Still, the way Goku charged like a bull straight at Lord Slug was really cool, but after that, then it wasn’t cool again until Goku was back on his feet after a thorough …-whoopin’ from Slug and powers up a Kaio-Ken attack. Unlike the first three movies, Goku sounds like he does in the series. It’s kind of disappointing to hear Goku raged up in the first three DBZ movies ’cause he kinda sounds like a girl. The Super Saiyan transformation was great (it’s easier just to call it Super Saiyan, so let’s do just that, ‘kay?) and he looked cool with waving black hair, red shadowing (his hair, I mean) and his pupils cannot be seen. Some people say it looks stupid, but I think it looks fairly cool. All in all, this was a great DBZ movie and you should buy it right away.

Oh yeah, that first song besides the theme that I was talking about, it is by Finger Eleven and it is called Drag You Down.

Northern Exposure is the best show ever made in all of television history.

This is the final season, and though Joel leaves the show to many peoples dislike, the rest of the characters keep the show interesting up till the finale episode. The way Joel’s experiences in Alaska end up changing him are very significant as we see in the final season, and this has always been in my opinion one of the most existentially sincere and compelling character changes ever developed in any television show. This is the result of writing that is comparable to high literature if you compare the character of Joel from the first episode to the final one he appears in, and the entire series of NX becomes a protrayal of a man who goes through the most poignant and profound experiences of self realization.

There are only two special features on this DVD, and they both belong to Pam Grier. And that’s reason enough to buy it! She has two nude scenes in this lackluster blaxploitation thriller that largely fails to thrill, and her sparkle is the only spark here. A good cast, including Jim Backus, Earha Kitt, Carl Weathers, Scatman Crothers, and Yaphet Kotto, is wasted here, but they try their best with what they’re given. The movie is in widescreen and the image quality is excellent. There’s the movie trailer and a scene and language selector, and that’s it. For `70s blaxploitation genre fans and Pam Grier fans only, but that’s quite a large audience!

“Friday Foster” is a light-hearted effort, not as violent or sexual as “Coffy” or “Foxy Brown” but is still enjoyable. As the title character, Grier plays a photo journalist for a fashion magazine who stumbles onto an assasination attempt on a prominent black politician. Following her nose, she discovers a larger conspiracy out to eliminate other black politicans. Still perfectly of the 1970’s, it has its share of violence, including an unintentionally hilarious rooftop gun fight between Yaphet Kotto and Carl Weathers. Pam Grier still contributes her obligatory nude scenes, one in a shower, one in a jacuzzi, and of course one in a bed. Comedian Godfrey Cambridge has an interesting role as a gay club owner, and Ted Lange from “The Love Boat” makes a funny cameo as a sweet-talking pimp. Other blaxploitation regulars appear throughout the film as well.

“Coffy” and “Foxy Brown” still remain the ultimate Pam Grier films, but this one still stands tall with it’s blaxploitation culture (”She’s just all woman”, “Damn I need a beer!”). “Friday Foster” is a worthy addition for the hardcore fans.

I’m disappointed to see many negative reviews of the 3rd Season. I got mine from Amazon last week and have already watched the whole season and it was great! I was nervous going in because I had heard from various people that season three wasn’t as good, but after I got watching I was not at all sure what the fuss was about, the show is pushing itself and growing in new directions like it needs to if it’s going to survive. The show challenges you to think about “drugs,” what’s right and wrong, and examines the inter-workings of suburbia with such cleverness that I am always pleasantly surprised.

Nancy Botwin is the perfect character, you love her, but sometimes want to slap her. Parker is an amazing actress and makes this show work from beginning to end. I also love her youngest Shane, he’s excellent this season and glad to see him getting more and more airtime. This show is both funny and heartbreaking and blows most shows on TV right now out of the water.

I’m really excited to see how season 4 plays out. I think it’s a great sign that they are breaking out of the “little boxes.”

Don’t listen to the negative reviews. If you liked season 1 and 2 you will love season 3!

Still entertaining, although not as believable. Everything seems really over-the-top. Weeds is still my favorite show though! *a note on the packaging. The discs weren’t clicked in and they were rubbing around during shipping. I thought they were used at first since there were scratches on the them right out of the package.
